Consider the location and the surface.

Privacy can matter, depending on the type of massage. You might be able to massage your partner’s neck at the park, but there are some massage options that might be questionable to do in public. Then again, the kitchen floor might be private, but less than appealing. The environment matters.


A firm surface is best. It’s not easy to give a great massage on a soft bed. In fact, it’s uncomfortable for the giver and the receiver. The type of oil or lotion matters.

Many skin moisturizers are poor choices for massage purposes. They don’t glide well and absorb into the skin too quickly. Choosing the right oil helps. Buy massage oils that are intended for massage purposes.

Use the oil properly.

Warm the massage oil before applying it to the body. You can pour it onto your hands and warm it by rubbing your hands together. You can also warm the bottle in warm water.

Always avoid applying the oil directly to your partner’s body. Always apply it to your hands. This avoids over application of the oil and helps to normalize the temperature of the oil.

Lighting, music, scent.

Consider all the aspects of the location where you’ll be giving the massage. There are many options for lighting. You can use color lighting, candles, or anything else that you think will work. Low lighting is often the best option.

  1. Get the pressure right. A massage can be too hard or too soft. Communicate with your partner and get feedback. It won’t take long before you know what aromatherapy massage techniques your partner likes.

  2. Avoid going too fast. It can take a little time to really work a muscle thoroughly. If you move your hands too quickly, or move to a new area too quickly, your partner can feel frustrated. Take your time. It’s not a race.

  3. Avoid lingering too long. It’s also possible to spend too much time on one area. The skin and the muscle can become irritated if you focus for too long on one spot.

How to be safe while performing an aromatherapy massage

  1. Some essential oils can exacerbate certain conditions. Certain oils should be avoided by those with existing medical conditions, such as asthma, epilepsy, and pregnancy. It’s not possible to provide an exhaustive list in this space, but be aware of the issue. Perform the necessary research to ensure you’re being safe.

  2. It can be a bad idea to apply essential oils directly to the skin without diluting them first. Two common examples of exceptions include lavender and tea tree, but there are still risks. It’s much easier to develop sensitivities to specific oils when they are applied in high concentrations. Which leads to the next item.

  3. Some oils react with ultraviolet light, specifically UVA. These exposed oils can then cause blistering and redness to the skin. The primary culprits are cold-pressed citrus oils. The distilled citrus oils are generally considered to be safe when exposed to UVA. Other phototoxic essential oils include:
  • Angelica Root Essential Oil

  • Cumin
  • Fig Leaf Absolute
  • Grapefruit (Cold Pressed)
  • Lemon (Cold Pressed)
  • Lime (Cold Pressed)

Essential oils can lead to allergic reactions or other types of sensitivities.

  • It’s a good idea to test any oils you’ve never used before on a small patch of skin.
  • To test for sensitivity, dilute the essential oil in question to a 2% concentration. The quick and dirty way to do this is to add 12 drops of essential oil to 30 ml of carrier oil or lotion. One tablespoon equals 15 ml.
  • Put one drop of the diluted oil on your skin. The arm is a good location.
  • Put a band aid or similar bandage over the oil and wait. If you feel any discomfort within 24 hours, immediately wash the area with soap and water.
  • If 24 hours pass without any negative reaction, you can consider the oil safe to use on your skin.

Some essential oils are considered unsafe for use by non-experts.

A few of these include: camphor, onion, wintergreen and bitter almond. There are more complete lists available online.

Beware of mixing aromatherapy and children.

Young children are curious and love the smell of many aromatherapy mixtures. This often results in the child drinking the mixture. Treat aromatherapy solutions as poisons when children are involved. Avoid underestimating the ability of your child to surprise you.

Do not consume essential oils.

Your child shouldn’t be drinking them, and neither should you! Though many oils are derived from common foods, essential oils are highly concentrated.

Essential oils have the power to heal and to harm. Understand the dangers that essential oils can pose in certain situations. Avoid causing yourself any undue harm. Remember, you’re trying to de-stress and comfort your spouse, not create additional suffering in your life. Use aromatherapy wisely.
