Want a cheaper alternative to SEMrush to perform keyword research and take your seo to the next level? Keep reading!

I’ve been online since 2015. Mostly blogging as a hobby until recently. The pandemic changed everything.  Tragically, I lost 90% of my homestay rental income during lockdowns.

I realized quickly that an online business is a lot more “pandemic proof” so I started getting serious about my online blogging and digital marketing business.  So I buckled down and started a new website in January 2021.

With 90% of my income gone, buying expensive keyword research tools was not an option.  I definitely needed a cheaper alternative to SEMrush.

SEMrush Free Alternative for Free Keyword Research

There is no shortage of SEO tools out there. That makes it even more confusing and overwhelming to find free ( or affordable)  options that really work.

Some of the free SEMrush alternatives I considered were google keyword planner, KeywordShitter, ask the public, and SEMScoop. I started using a combination of these free tools. Many of them provided conflicting metrics which left me with a “hit or miss” SEO strategy for the first 9 months.  I started getting traffic to my blog, but not many clicks.  Then, everything changed in September!

The little traffic I was getting plunged in September after the google update.  I knew I had to focus more on SEO.  So I started looking for a cheaper alternative to SEMrush.

This post may contain affiliate links. This means if you click and buy, I may make a commission at no cost to you. Please see my full disclosure policy for more details.

Finally! The SEMrush Cheaper Alternative I was looking for

With the FREE tools I was using, my SEO policy was hit or miss.  The free tools were widely inaccurate.  One tool gave results for 3600 search volume and 20 difficulty level.  I was about to publish a blog post based on this when I decided to try the FREE trial of keysearch.

The same keyword showed a 57 difficulty score and 20 search volume.  I could never rank for it!! And with a search volume of just 20 searches per month, it would be futile to even try.

I signed up for FREE version and started October 15, 2021.  By that date, the traffic to my blog had taken a nose dive to 96 per day based on the date in Google Search Console.  I was feeling defeated and overwhelmed. But giving up was not (yet) an option.

I decided to totally immerse myself in keyword research for the 30 day FREE Trial in Keysearch.  I looked at all the FREE tutorials and videos online on how to use the platform and learned a lot.  Now it was time to test-drive it.

Signing Up And Digging In!

The process to sign-up was easy and flawless. It took me less than 5 minutes to confirm everything and get access to the dashboard.  I had zoomed in on the content assistant in the tutorials so I decided to try that first. That was a good decision!

I was instantly blown away. I fell in-love with the content assistant instantly, and started loading up some of my existing blog posts.  Some blog posts were too short, and would need additional text to rank better in the SERPS.  But in addition to the length of the post,  I also started revamping most of my post with the “must keywords”, related keywords and top url keywords suggested in the content assistant.

I did that for one week and re-submitted the revamped posts to google for indexing.  When I checked my stats in GCS on October 23, my mouth dropped. The traffic showed a sharp increase in just one (1) week after revamping just a few articles using the content assistant feature in Keysearch.

Want  a SEMrush Cheaper Alternative? This is it!

I felt empowered!  So I started decided to analyze my website using the explore feature.  I was  pleasantly surprised to see that my 9 month old site was not doing too badly.

I was ranking for 124 keywords but  because of poor keyword selections using the free keyword tools And poor SEO writing, my keyword distribution was page 3 and higher.

The explore data was indicating that I needed to target keywords with a  score of 34 or lower.  But HOW would I find keywords with a score of 34 or lower with descent volume?  It all seemed daunting!

I had to find a way to select better keywords and write better SEO Posts using the content assistant.  SO I jumped into the keyword feature.

Keysearch Keyword Research

Keysearch reviews

This feature is AMAZING!  I entered in one keyword and it give me 699 options to  research. So how would I find the keywords with a target score of 34 or less without spending precious time going through 699 keywords?

Keysearch has a filter feature. I filtered the 699 for keywords of with a score of 35 or less and…VOILA!

Magically, an impressive list of keywords displayed all with a score of 35 or less and many with amazing volume!  I was sold!  Now all I had to do was:

  1. Select a keyword
  2. Plug it into the content assistant
  3. Write a great post with the right amount of words as indicated by the content assistant , using as many of the “must words”, the related keywords and the top url keywords as I can.
  4. Copy and paste the blog post into my blog
  5. Add relevant images and links & hit Publish!
  6. Head over to google search console and submit the new link for indexing
  7. Sit back and let google work its magic
  8. Rinse, wash, repeat

I felt like I had FINALLY made a meaningful breakthrough in my online business potential.

YES!!  This is a game changer.  I now had a system that made sense and that works!

My recommendation For a cheaper alternative to SEMrush

If you’ve been spinning your wheels using FREE tools for keyword research like I’ve been doing, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.  Keysearch is an amazing tool and at a truly affordable rate.  There is no longer an excuse to languish in the SERRPS on pages 3 and above.  No one will find you.

If your goal is to make money online blogging, Keysearch is an essential tool in your success kit!

Other features included are backlink analysis and competitor analysis.  Features you would pay much more for in your used Ahrefs and SEMrush.  If you are looking for alternatives to SEMrush, this really is it. Keysearch is hands down the best SEMrush alternative for under $20 per month.

Keyword Research Tools: How to Pick a Good One

Online marketers who create niche sites or use paid advertising will be the first ones to testify that a good keyword research tool is a NEED and not a want. You absolutely must get your keyword research right if you want to rank well and get sales.

While you could spend days or even weeks digging through the search engine results yourself, it’ll take a lot of time and effort. And you might still slip up here and there because the rankings of the different websites may fluctuate.

The best way to get around this problem will be to use a good keyword research tool. Different marketers will recommend different keyword research software, but for the most part, the top brands are all equally as good as each other… with a few small differences here and there.

Ultimately the best keyword research tool is the one that you’re most comfortable using AND can comfortably afford. Let’s look at a few important points to bear in mind when purchasing one…

Try it out

Many of the top keyword research tools will offer you a free trial period (with a limited number of features) for you to test out their software. One of the best ways to get a ‘feel’ for the different tools on the market will be to sign up for the free trials.

Play around with the different tools and do some keyword research with them. See which ones are the easiest to use. Ideally, you should focus on one tool at a time and spend a week or so using it. Then cancel it just before the trial ends so that you don’t get charged for it.

Now you’ll have the hang of using that tool. It’s time to try another keyword research tool. Repeat the same process and see which tool is easier to use. Look at the different features and decide which ones are more important to you.

You’re now ready to make an informed decision when buying a keyword research tool that’s right for you.

In-depth data

How to use Keysearch

The keyword research tool you’re buying should give you data on the keywords’ competitiveness, the difficulty when it comes to ranking the keywords, the number of backlinks pointing to the pages ranking for that keyword and so on.

Good tools will show you the top 10 results the keywords are ranking for… and with a few clicks, you’ll be able to get data on the ranking sites too. You’ll be able to analyze the quality of the backlinks, the domain age and even the CPC metrics.

This is very useful data when it comes to strategizing how to rank your blog posts and so on. Keyword research will ensure that you do NOT go in blindly and try to rank for keywords that are too competitive and difficult to rank for.

Location-based keywords

The keyword tool you’re using should allow you to discover location-based keywords, especially if you’re doing offline marketing and approaching businesses to offer your SEO services to help them get ranked in their area.

Tracks your keywords’ rankings

Some keyword research tools will help you track where you’re ranking in the search results for the keywords you’re targeting. If this is an important requirement for you, make sure the tool you purchase has this feature.

Other than these pointers, anything else is up to your personal preferences. As mentioned earlier, you’ll discover the most about a keyword tool by exploring its features during the trial period. You’ll also want to watch the tutorial videos so that you understand how the tool works.

There is a learning curve with each tool, but once you figure it out, it’ll be easy. Start testing the different keyword tools out there and the one that’s best for your business. This is a tool that most online marketers will need in their business.

Best Keyword Research and Tracking Tools

Picking a niche and a business model is easy to do without conducting in depth keyword research. But almost every other aspect of your business will require it.

From choosing the right domain name to developing content for your blog – keywords and phrases are what will tell your audience what your page is about and help search engines rank it to perform better for you.

Many newbie marketers don’t know how to conduct keyword research and even those who do don’t know which tool is best to deliver the right results. There are many different features among the many keyword tools on the market.
