I did not have a clue about home remedies for stress. However, twenty years of trial and error have convinced me that home remedies for stress can be just as effective, and in some situations, even more effective than any pills your doctor gives you.

Home Remedies For Stress

Easy To Implement At Home Remedy For Stress

How can you naturally de-stress your life? Start in the kitchen, by changing your eating and drinking habits:

  1. Start by eating oats. If you are not getting enough oats in your diet, you are probably not getting enough fiber, and are therefore stressing out your system, even if you are otherwise eating healthy. Start each morning off with a bowl of oatmeal—not only will it aid in your digestion, helping to calm your system, it is also an anti-inflammatory and can help relieve chronic inflammation that might be further bothering your system.
  1. Another change you can make in the kitchen is switching chamomile tea in for your coffee. Chamomile tea can help boost your metabolism and provide many of the same benefits as drinking coffee, but it won’t rev you up like coffee can.

Easy Home Remedies for Stress Reduction You Can Use in the Bathroom

There are also a few changes you can make to your bathroom to make it a more luxurious and enjoyable place to be:

  1. Surround yourself with aromatherapy oils and candles. Lavender is a great option, as it is naturally soothing. Whether you prefer candles, diffusers, or oil warmers, make your bathroom a calming place by utilizing the power of aromatherapy.
  1. Indulge in a bubble bath. A bubble bath doesn’t just have to be for special occasions. Especially if you are dealing with chronic stress, get some bubble bath and use it on a daily basis. Not only can a bath help save the environment (as it usually requires less water than a shower), it can be supremely comforting to soak in a warm bath, surrounded by aromatic bubbles.

Soothing Home Remedies for Stress in the Bedroom

Extend the calm to your bedroom by using these tips:

  1. Start keeping a journal. At first, keeping a journal might just feel like one more thing you have on your to-do list. You’ll soon find, however, that keeping a journal helps you cement memories, organize your thoughts, and process difficult feelings. Writing down what happens during your day and how you feel can help remove the stress associated with those things. Once you put it down on paper, it’s purged from your system and you can stop worrying about it.
  1. Play soothing music. Having soothing music as a constant in your bedroom will not only help you sleep better, it will make any time you spend in your bedroom more enjoyable. Invest in some calming music and a CD player or sound system that makes it easy to queue up whenever you need it.

Easy Home Remedies for Stress in Your Backyard

Your outdoor spaces should be the most relaxing in your home. Here are a few ways to make sure that’s the case:

  1. Get a rock water fountain. There’s something about running water—the sound of it, the sight of it—that soothes the soul. In feng shui, the water element represents freedom and self-expression. Having a water feature in your backyard can bring those two things into your life. Plus, a water fountain will usually attract friendly birds and animals, which are always fun to see while sitting out in your yard.
    1. Camp in your backyard. If you love being out in nature but cannot always find the time to drive out into the woods and spend a few nights in total isolation, you can put up a tent in your backyard and enjoy the healing power of nature, a few short steps from your home.

Hi Liz, thanks for the comment. Oats is a good basis for a healthy breakfast. Try it and let me know what you think.

  2. Chelsea Holmes says:

I love these stress relieving home remedy ideas! I just went to my doctor the other week and he told me that I needed anti-anxiety to treat my constant stress! I was appalled. I felt like he didn’t listen to me at all and just pulled out his prescription book and started writing. I can’t wait to try these ideas, especially the ones in the kitchen. I really think that eating more oatmeal and switching out at least one of my cups of coffee for some chamomile tea will help me feel more relaxed. And I LOVE the idea of taking time each day to soak in a warm aromatic bath. It makes me feel better just thinking about it!

    1. Darlene Berkel says:

Chelsea, it’s amazing how quickly doctors like to pull out their pads to write prescriptions. There is a prescription for every ailment and there is also a natural remedy for every ailment. The benefit of the natural remedy is that there are no ( or very little) negative side effects. Pills come with a long and exhausting list of warnings and side effects. Much better to try home remedies for stress and other natural remedies. And if you have constant stress, then it may be time to re-evaluate your life. 3. Rachel Kane says:

Darlene, I love the idea to get a water fountain! I know I need to make my home a more tranquil place, I currently work from home and so it is hard for me to relax when my work day is done because I am always in my office. I really like this idea of setting myself up a little piece of paradise in my backyard by a water feature where I can go to specifically relax. Ever since I was a girl I have loved running water, it is so soothing to me. I have never even thought about getting a water fountain, but I know that it would really help me make a space where I can relax and find some tranquility in my daily life! Awesome ideas, thank you so much!

    1. Darlene Berkel says:

Rachel, your’re welcome. Glad you like it. The sound of water is one of the most soothing, relaxing things I know. I am working on creating two “relaxation zones” with water fountains. One in my backyard and one near the patio in the front. Join me? Lets’ post our before and after pictures when it’s done. Water fountains is one of the home remedies for stress that does not have to break the bank. You can go as simple or as extravagant as your budget would allow. And reap all the stress-relief benefits! 🙂

  4. LOVE this!!! I always prefer a more natural approach to avoid the side effects of meds. I really need to take more baths, LOL! I also didn’t realize that about oats. Yes, I’ll feed it to the kids, but I haven’t eaten them myself in years.

  5. Great article! Love the games. Catan is so much fun.

  6. Darlene Berkel says:

@Val, thanks for stopping by. Stress relief games are so much fun!

@Georgiana, Glad you like it. I am BIG fan of natural remedies for stress. A soothing bath, with candles, essential oils and relaxing music is THE way to melt your stress away on a Saturday afternoon. ( Trust me! :-)) And yes…oats is good for the kids, but it good for YOU too!

  7. This was a great read! Wow, I did not know that about baths with regard to using less water than a shower…Guess I learn something new every day 🙂

As for me, I have several fish tanks and they are the most tranquil things to watch…once you have an “established” tank it’s all easy street from there. I used to own a tabletop fountain and I thought that was the neatest thing ever until it quit working…I wish I could find a good one that worked long-term. But fishkeeping is certainly one of my favorite stress-busters!

    1. Darlene Berkel says:

Thanks for the comment Jennifer. Glad you enjoyed the post! I am planning to put a garden pond in my yard for exactly the reason you mention: fish-keeping can be one of nature’s best stress relievers. The trickling sound of water combined with the stress-free hustle and bustle of the fish is calming and soothing to body, mind, and spirit.

  8. Sandy Billingsly says:

What fun ideas Darlene! I love finding new ways to make my home and my life more stress free and here are some great ones! When I read your post I immediately declared that Friday night family game night. Everyone was a little bit mopey about the idea at first, but when Friday rolled around and they all smelled the pizza and I brought out the decks of cards to play our favorite family card game, they all perked up. Darlene, we had SUCH a good time! We laughed and chatted and spent some real quality time together for the first time in I-don’t-know-how long. There were no electronics in sight and we went into the weekend and the next week all feeling refreshed. It was nearly magical, I swear. We have decided to make it a monthly thing at least, and maybe even more often than that. Thank you so much Darlene!

    1. Darlene Berkel says:

You very welcome Sandy! I am thrilled to hear that your family night is such a slamming success. That’s awesome. If you have not tried Wii nintendo for family night as yet, you gotta try that too! You can get a wide variety of great sport games, balance games, and so much more. We LOVE it! 🙂 From the 4 year old to the 68 year old!
