- Read the Bible – The Bible, is full of valuable information and quotations that can help you find relief from stress. Psalm 31, for example, says, “The remedy for stress is to trust in the sovereign, personal Lord.” This verse, and others, can help you turn your attention back to God. I learned that when you are in His hands, all things will work together for your good. Daily Bible reading helps me refocus my life. It helps me to remember that in the big picture, the little stressors do not really matter. (Of course, reading any other book that you enjoy is a good way to destress too!)

- Call a friend – Finding a listening ear or being that listening ear can be one of the best ways to de-stress. Just hearing someone who you love and trust, and who supports you can make even the worst days better. In your worst days of loneliness, sadness, and difficulty, turning to a friend can ease stress and tension. Letting that person be your support or even just a distraction is a great way to lower your stress level. Plus, studies have shown that people who have regular positive interactions with loved ones have much lower stress levels than people who do not. For both of your sakes, call your friend!
- Get out in nature – The sun has a very real effect on our bodies. Not only does it tell the body to start producing vitamin D (which is essential for every single function in the body). Vitamin D can also boost our brain’s production of serotonin, the feel-good chemical. Stars are almost as good as catching a little sunlight. Why? Because they can often help you to recall the wonder you first felt when you realized just how much space was out there. Go on a hike, try to catch a glimpse of a deer or some birds, smell the roses. A slow walk on a nature trail is a great way to learn how to destress your life.

- Laugh it off – Find a television show that makes you laugh, no matter how frustrating or sad your day has been. You probably already have one—it’s your old standby, the show that never gets old, even if you’ve seen every episode five times. My old standby is Golden Girls. - Soak in a tub – In my home, the bathroom door is the only interior door that has a lock on it. Why? Mostly so I can have perfect privacy and silence while soaking in a warm bath. I love to destress my life by soaking my stress away. You can always amp up your bath by adding bubbles, a bath bomb, or even just milk and oatmeal to help hydrate your skin. If you’re feeling a little under the weather or congested, try this. Add some essential oils like eucalyptus or lavender to the water. It will perk you up and help clear away any sickness or sadness.

- Play with a pet – There have been multiple studies about the positive effects of owning a pet. As long as you’re not allergic to animal hair or dandruff, having a dog or cat can lower blood pressure. Having a four legged friend can also increase serotonin production. and increase levels of life satisfaction. A pet isn’t just a responsibility. They can be loving companions who make you happy when you are sad and help you calm down when you are stressed out. If you don’t have your own pet, here’s what you can do. Volunteer to walk dogs or play with cats at the local animal shelter. Another option is to borrow a pet from a friend or neighbor for a few hours.
