One of the problems with stress is that it has the ability to cause our temper to flare up. It’s hard to be kind and patient when you’re under a lot of pressure. Letting that anger out is hardly ever a productive coping strategy. Instead, walk away and make yourself count to ten slowly, taking deliberate slow breaths along the way.
It may not seem like much, but it gives you the break you need to keep your emotions from boiling over and the anger from flaring up. While it may not do much to treat chronic stress in the long run, it is a quick break for your mind and an effective strategy to calm down quickly.

One of my favorite ways to relax without alcohol is to head out for a quick walk. Getting out in the fresh air, moving around a little, and simply breathing is a very effective way to release tension, relax, and rejuvenate.
You may be worried that it’s a waste of time, especially when you’re on a tight deadline, but trust me and give it a try. You’ll find yourself coming back from a short walk with a lot more energy and a much clearer mind. You’ll easily make up the time you spent outside and feel better.
There are a lot of benefits to taking a walk. It’s easy to do, you can head out and get in a quick ten minute walk no matter where you are and you don’t need any special equipment. You can walk inside, but it will be even more beneficial if you head outside. The fresh air and sunlight will increase the benefits you’re getting from your walk.

Taking a walk works on so many different levels. The first is that it gives you a chance to get away from the stresses and tensions of the day. You’re literally walking away from it for a bit. This allows you to come back with a fresh mind and a fresh perspective when you get back.
It also gives your mind a break from whatever it is weighing you down mentally and emotionally. You get to focus on simply moving your body and admiring your surroundings outside for a little while.
Often, when we take a break from thinking consciously about our problems, our unconscious mind takes over and comes up with ideas and solutions our conscious mind couldn’t find.
Taking a break from the stressful, negative thoughts for a bit and allowing the subconscious to take over is often what brings that big breakthrough you’ve been hoping for. The rhythmic act of walking helps this process along.
Walking also happens to be form of low impact exercise you can do anytime, anywhere. It gets you moving, helps release tension in your muscles, pump more blood through your body, and thus more oxygen into your cells.
You can walk indoors on a treadmill, but when you walk outside in the fresh air, the rejuvenating effect is amplified. It’s also part of the reason a quick walk helps reenergize you and makes you feel better.

There’s something very relaxing about sticking your hands in the dirt. It’s also incredibly rewarding when you can make a plant grow. Give it a try and see if even a quick 30 minutes spent puttering around in the garden doesn’t make your stress levels go way down.
There’s just something very relaxing about being outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Having your hands in good, clean soil is a lot more pleasant than you may think and the microorganisms in the soil are beneficial.
I recently read that planting and sticking your hands in soil can help fight depression. That alone is a great reason to try planting or gardening.
One of the wonderful things about gardening is that it can come in many different forms and shapes. You don’t need a big plot of land or even a yard at all to take advantage of it. You can plant something on your kitchen counter, your window sill, or your balcony.

You can start very small with a few containers on your counters and in the window. From there you can add a few larger containers on the patio, or window boxes. For many of us this is as much gardening as we want to do and it’s a great place to start for anyone.
You get your hands dirty and you have something to go water and tend to on a daily basis. Above all, you get the satisfaction of seeing the plants grow and thrive.
Raised garden beds are a great introduction to larger scale gardening. Start slow and see what you like and don’t like. Then expand every year until your garden is at a level that you’re comfortable with. You’ll love how much more relaxed you’ll be almost as much as the sweet fruits and veggies of your harvest.
What to Plant for Relaxation?
When it comes to what types of plants you want to grow you have just as many options or more. If you’re looking for something simple, plant a few herbs and keep them on your kitchen sink. If you enjoy flowers, create a little flower bed in your front yard, put up a window box, or buy a hanging planter.
If you want to get started growing some edible plants, how about a salad garden that can sit on your counter and grow fresh lettuce for you. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries all do really well in containers that can sit on your patio or balcony.
My personal favorite is spinach. It’s low maintenance, FAST growing plant and jam-packed with super healthy, stress-busting nutrients.
Once you move out into the yard with bigger plots, you can look at different types of vegetables including beans, potatoes, peppers, zucchini, squash and more. Planting a few fruit hedges or trees are another fun option and something that will bring you joy and produce for years to come.
Remember, the important thing isn’t what or how. The important part is that you enjoy what you’re doing and that you find it relaxing. Play around with planting different things in different places and containers and see what works well to help you relax without alcohol.
