Be sure to clean, tone and moisturize your face once every morning and every evening too. You also want to apply lotion to your body at least once a day to protect your skin from excessive dryness.

I don’t know if it’s because I came to motherhood late in life or I would have always been like this as I aged but I feel absolutely no guilt in taking me time.
In fact I think I used to horrify friends when I would share with them that, when my daughter was about five, I began looking her straight in the face if she would interrupt my early early early morning routine and say: unless you’re bleeding out the eyeballs honey this is mom time. If I take care of me then I can take care of you after!
Yes my silly tone reflected my intent – – to lovingly remind her of the importance of me but that it did not trump the importance of her – – but the message was clear and I’ve been consistent about that as she’s gotten older. A slice of silence is my best self care.

What a GREAT comment Carla. I Love the fact that you are very assertive and consistent when it comes taking time for yourself. I am that way too. I will drop everything ( and everyone) for my moment with “ME”. It’s the only way I know to nurture my mind, body, and soul so that I can continue to give to others as much as I can. It’s good that even your five year old daughter got to learn at a young age that mom-time is crucial time. She’ll grow up to value self-care for herself too! A slice of solitude ( and sometimes a WHOLE CHUNK) is my best self care for stress relief! 🙂

  2. What a great list of self care ideas! I always find that spending some time outdoors, whether its going for a walk or taking care of my garden, allows me to clear my mind and reconnect and refocus on what is important.

Thanks for sharing Jennifer. I am a big fan of gardening therapy for selfcare and stress relief. I LOVE my palm trees…they get special food and special care like any “pet” would. Spending time in my garden forces me to slow down and focus on the natural cycle of life. If plants need care and nurturing in order to thrive, then what about us as busy 21st century women?

  3. Great list Darlene! As for me, art projects, and some good old pleasure reading are my R and R activities of choice, and spending time with my cats. Something about the familiar purring of a contented cat nearby that can be very therapeutic. Lastly would be watching the fish in one of my tanks….Fish tanks are very serene to look at (which may be one reason you see them sometimes in doctor or dentist waiting rooms 🙂

Thanks for the comment Jennifer. I am no cat lover, but I love birds so I can relate. Something about the chirping of birds nearby is supremely therapeutic. I started leaving bread crumbs out to entice them to come in…and BOY do they come in! 🙂 It’s really relaxing to set aside 10-15 minutes each day to watch them. I love the idea of fish tanks too. 🙂
