Brenda is a successful woman who admits she needs a self care night routine to give herself permission to relax. She is a full-time career professional and a part-time wellness coach. Her passion is helping her clients embrace healthier lifestyles and she loves what she does.

She works a full day then spends 2-3 hours in the evenings with her kids. She cooks supper, supervises homework assignments, and tucks her children into bed.

After her kids are asleep, Brenda starts up her laptop and starts working again until the wee hours of the morning. As a solopreneur, she’s the only employee, and struggles to take any downtime. She wants to be there for her clients 24/7. She’s overwhelmed but she feels guilty when she isn’t working.

Disconnecting Is Essential For Establishing Your Self care Night Routine

When Brenda described her self-care night routine to her stress management coach, the coach asked two (2) one questions.  “What if every evening you created a sweet space where you slow down and shut out the loudness of the world out for a while?” “What if you then used that time to focus on creating more of what you want in your life and relationships?”

Like Brenda, you may think that sounds like great advice for your personal life. But shutting down and relaxing at night can be a powerful way for female career professionals and entrepreneurs to bring their focus back to the core. This will give you fresh energy and enthusiasm so you can rock it again in a new day. But how do you give your mind and body space to rest? How do you create a self care night routine that you can stick to? Try doing using these solutions.

Consider a Technology Curfew For a Successful Night time Self Care Routine

self care night routineChoose a time in the evenings when you’ll shut down your technology. Tablets and smartphones generate a lot of light and this light often makes it difficult for you to relax when it’s time to sleep.

But what if you’re one of those people that has to play a game on your iPad right before bed? Or… what if you like to binge-watch Netflix until you’re sleepy? Look in your device settings and see if your tablet or smartphone has “night shift” or “night mode”.

Switching your device to night mode means the lighting is subtly shifted to reflect reds and oranges. These colors cause your brain to produce melatonin, the hormone that allows you to get a good night’s sleep.

Silence Your Notifications during Your Self Care Evening Routine

self care night routineIf you get notifications from your email or news sites, turn these off every night. The news is often depressing and many of the images are disturbing. This can make it hard for you to sleep at night or cause you to have nightmares.

As for email notifications, they’ll only add more tumbling thoughts to your mind. That same urgent email will still be in your inbox waiting for you tomorrow morning. So, why not tackle it when you’re at your freshest?

Lock Yourself Out To Protect Your Night Time Self Care Routine

self care night routineIf you’re seriously addicted to your devices, you can use an app like Freedom to lock yourself out. Set your schedule in advance and the app will prevent you from doing tasks like browsing the internet or playing with apps during your chosen time.

You could use this to set an 8-hour block, ensuring you get plenty of time to relax and rest each night. You can also block social media sites! That may be perfect if you spend hours every night scrolling through your Instagram feed while you’re in bed.

The first step to making over your self-care night time routines is to disconnect from technology so you can slow down and relax. Doing this lets you greet each new morning with an abundance of energy and joy.

Talk with & Serve Your Loved Ones As Part Of Your Self Care Evening Routine

Have you ever found yourself at the end of the day, wondering what your spouse or kids were up to? You feel like you’re ships passing in the night, barely seeing each other. This can lead to loneliness and make you feel distant from those you love most.

The good news is that the slow pace of evening makes it the perfect time to reconnect with your loved ones. But you have to be intentional about it. Start by following these four self care night routine ideas.

Self Care Night Routine Idea #1. Check In with Your Family & Friends

self care night routineAsk your spouse or kids about their day. Pause to listen and ask follow up questions. If a loved one had a bad day, ask what you can do to improve it.  Perhaps a family member is struggling with a difficult situation, offer to brainstorm solutions together.

If you live alone, make a quick touch point call with someone you care deeply about. Tell them about a moment or two from your day. Did you see something funny while grocery shopping? Did you try a new dish from your favorite restaurant? Stories like these while small can leave you feeling connected with your family or friends, even if you’re not in the same physical space.

Self Care Night Routine Idea #2. Do a Joint Activity

self care night routineSome of your loved ones like your teenagers may have difficulty opening up and sharing about their day. If that’s the case, do an activity together while you talk. You could cook a meal together and swap silly stories.

Play a game or do a puzzle. As you take turns and put pieces together, ask scenario questions. For example, ask your teenager what their perfect day would look like, what one item they would want to save in a house fire, or what they would do if they inherited a large sum of money.

Self Care Night Routine Idea #3. Embrace Calm Together

self care night routineShare with your loved ones that you’re trying to create a calm space at the end of the day. Invite them to help you and encourage them to do the same. For little kids, this might mean helping them put away their toys each night or reading a special bedtime story together.

For older kids and teens, that may mean reminding them to take a warm shower before bed. You could also encourage them to try gentle stretching exercises to help relax and relieve the day’s tension.

Self Care Night Routine Idea #4. Make Time to Snuggle

self care night routineOne of the best self care night routine activities you and your loved ones can do before bed is to cuddle. Snuggling together lowers blood pressure, relieves pain, and reduces stress and anxiety.

Pick a snuggle spot for your family that feels comfortable. It could be the couch, your bed, or your child’s bed. Use snuggle time to say the loving things you want them to hear every day.

If you live alone, you can still get the benefits of snuggling. Just cuddle with a beloved pet instead. You’ll be a happier pet parent and your dog or cat will be happier, too.

Structure your evenings so you can spend plenty of time with your loved ones. Reconnecting with those you care the most about boosts your mood and makes it easier to fall asleep at night.

Taking Time to Reflect on Your Day

One of the best self care night routine exercises you can do at the end of each day is to take time for reflection. Reflecting on your day eases stress and anxiety. It also helps you process what you’ve learned. Another benefit is that it allows you the space to work through problems that are troubling you.

Note important things as part of your self-care night routine at home

These are usually the items you don’t want to forget. They tend to fit into one of these three categories: follow up, delegation, and to do. Follow up tasks usually involve communication centered activities. For example, invoicing a client for this week’s work. Or… emailing your joint venture partner about an upcoming launch.

Delegation is for tasks that could be easily outsourced. As for your to do category, only tasks that must be done by you should go here. Tasks like brainstorming your next project or writing your next blog post belong in that list.

Make a gratitude list

self care night routineIf you don’t regularly make a gratitude list, this can be a hard exercise at first. But don’t give up even if your list seems pretty basic at first. The more you practice gratitude the more you’ll find reasons to be grateful.

Savor the small things—think about experiences you’ve had today that you were genuinely glad for. Did a client give you a compliment that made your heart swell? Maybe you were able to watch the sun rise? Did your spouse send you a text message reminding you that you’re loved?

Share what you’ve learned.

What did you learn today that you might want to remember tomorrow? Did you learn that you can schedule your invoices in advance saving you time? Did you discover your followers respond best to certain types of social media posts?

You can extend this question past your professional life. Did you learn something new about your spouse? Perhaps you took a quiz that shed light on your personality? Did you listen to your teenager and discover a personality quirk you hadn’t noticed before?

Pray for people and situations you feel drawn to.

self care night routineDuring your journaling session, you may find your mind keeps drifting back to certain situations. Maybe you have a friend that just lost her job. Maybe a family member has been diagnosed with a serious illness.

Use your journal to write down your concerns and pray for them. Praying for someone else can give you a sense of peace and calm.

If you don’t pray, use your journal to write a short, encouraging note to your friend or loved one. Let them know you care and that you’ll be there to support them every step of their journey.

Journaling is a great way to wrap up your day. It gives you the space you need to empty your mind so you can start fresh again tomorrow.

Honor Your Mind and Body with A Self-Care Night Routine

Before doing a presentation at a conference, a women’s speaker had a table set up. On the table, she placed fifty empty cups and one full pitcher. She took the full pitcher and filled several cups.

Eventually, the pitcher was emptied but there were still cups that hadn’t been filled. She showed the empty pitcher to her audience. “How can I continue to fill these cups?”

After a pause, she answered her own question, “I can’t. Not without filling the pitcher again. Just like the pitcher must be filled again before it can continue, so must you. That’s why self-care is so important.”

Your body is a temple. It’s a very powerful vessel.

Self-care allows you to replenish your own strength and natural energy. You can make self care part of your night time routine by following these tips:

Wash Up

self care night routineSome women enjoy taking a warm shower or bubble bath at night. It gives you a chance to wash away the dirt and grime of the day.  But more importantly, it can help set the stage for a peaceful night’s sleep.

If you prefer to shower in the mornings, then make sure you wash your face before bed. This helps you to remove makeup and lotions you may have put on earlier in the day. If you leave these products on your face overnight, you’ll be blocking your pores and increasing your chances of developing an acne outbreak.

Take Care of Your Teeth

self care night routineAfter you’ve finished washing up, take a moment to brush and floss your teeth. Brushing and flossing removes debris from your mouth and prevents cavities.

If you’d like to brighten your smile, use whitening strips, but keep a sharp eye on the time. Leaving them in too long can damage the enamel on your teeth.

Play Soft Music

play soft music to relax and unwindAs you to unwind and prepare for bed, listen to music. Pick songs that soothe you and leave you feeling relaxed. You could even create a few playlists designed for your self-care night time routine.

Try going to YouTube and searching for “sleep music” without quotations. You’ll find millions of results to choose from. With so many options, you’re sure to find something you’ll like.

Bust Out Your Comfy PJs

get comfortable PJ's for a good nights sleepAs part of your self-care night routine, change into your favorite night wear. Pick the type of night wear that makes you feel comfortable.

If you love satin night dresses and they make you happy, then buy a few to wear to bed. If you prefer flannel PJs because you love how warm they are, buy flannel PJs. Always wear night clothes that make you feel good about yourself.

Make self-care a priority each evening. You deserve to feel your best every night.

Create a Tranquil Space

Your bedroom environment can shape your night time routine even if you don’t realize it. That’s why it’s so important that you take some time to create a tranquil space where you can relax and enjoy a restful night’s slumber. Start by following these self care night routine diy tips.

Organize Your Bedroom

make your bedroom a haven of restIt’s hard to sleep in a space where every surface is cluttered. Having books stacked all around the room or having half of your makeup products all over your dresser can make your room feel cluttered.

Take a good look at your sleeping space. How can you organize it? Perhaps you need another book case or maybe you need a storage basket for your beauty products. If you have a bedside table, arrange it so only the items you truly need are stored on it.

Consider a Noise Machine

noise machine for better rest and relaxationIf you have noisy neighbors or if you’re a light sleeper, you may want to get a noise machine. A noise machine will create ambient noise so you’re less likely to hear other sounds.

Some noise machines can be programmed to play nature sounds. This can be helpful if you find the sound of waves lapping the shore calming or if you think the sound of a rainy thunderstorm is soothing.

Use Essential Oils

If you don’t like the sweet scent of lavender, then you may want to choose cedarwood instead. This essential oil smells like wood and can make you think of exploring in a lush forest.
