Choose a time in the evenings when you’ll shut down your technology. Tablets and smartphones generate a lot of light and this light often makes it difficult for you to relax when it’s time to sleep.
But what if you’re one of those people that has to play a game on your iPad right before bed? Or… what if you like to binge-watch Netflix until you’re sleepy? Look in your device settings and see if your tablet or smartphone has “night shift” or “night mode”.

You could use this to set an 8-hour block, ensuring you get plenty of time to relax and rest each night. You can also block social media sites! That may be perfect if you spend hours every night scrolling through your Instagram feed while you’re in bed.

If you don’t regularly make a gratitude list, this can be a hard exercise at first. But don’t give up even if your list seems pretty basic at first. The more you practice gratitude the more you’ll find reasons to be grateful.
Savor the small things—think about experiences you’ve had today that you were genuinely glad for. Did a client give you a compliment that made your heart swell? Maybe you were able to watch the sun rise? Did your spouse send you a text message reminding you that you’re loved?
Share what you’ve learned.
What did you learn today that you might want to remember tomorrow? Did you learn that you can schedule your invoices in advance saving you time? Did you discover your followers respond best to certain types of social media posts?
You can extend this question past your professional life. Did you learn something new about your spouse? Perhaps you took a quiz that shed light on your personality? Did you listen to your teenager and discover a personality quirk you hadn’t noticed before?
Pray for people and situations you feel drawn to.
During your journaling session, you may find your mind keeps drifting back to certain situations. Maybe you have a friend that just lost her job. Maybe a family member has been diagnosed with a serious illness.
Use your journal to write down your concerns and pray for them. Praying for someone else can give you a sense of peace and calm.
If you don’t pray, use your journal to write a short, encouraging note to your friend or loved one. Let them know you care and that you’ll be there to support them every step of their journey.
