We want to combat depression.
Depression can be a result of stress. The two are closely linked. You might be experiencing this in your own life. You’re working hard, you have the family you want, the job you want, but you still feel discouraged and listless. Stress only magnifies and compounds depression. Stress management activities can help you repel that depression so you can live a more fruitful, happier life.
We want to be more decisive.
Have you ever felt so stressed out that you cannot make a simple decision? Even something as easy as deciding what to wear or what to eat for dinner can become an overwhelming. Something simple could seem like a Difficult, terrifying decision when you are already stressed out. If you want to be more decisive in your life, find a way to combat the stress that you are feeling. Making sure that your life includes effective stress management activities is one of the very best ways.
We need to be able to concentrate.
You likely know exactly how difficult it is to concentrate when you are feeling stressed out. Your mind is jumping from idea to idea, from thought to thought. You might even be experiencing intrusive negative thoughts. Negative thoughts make it difficult to concentrate on what you are trying to do. You may be simply trying to write an email and you cannot stop thinking about something negative. This is where stress management activities like journaling and affirmations come in. Take 10 minutes to “dump” the negative thoughts on a piece of paper and replace them with positive affirmation. It’s a fact. Your ability to concentrate and your stress levels are closely linked.
Stress leads to overeating.
This can happen without you even noticing it. You sit down to have a small snack and before you know it, you have eaten every single chip in the bag. Your mind is so distracted by stress that it doesn’t notice that you are eating far beyond the point of feeling full. Stress can even drive you to eat more than you need, as your body sees this intrinsic stress response as an indication that there might not be as much food in the future. Stress eating may seem harmless but if you succumb to it, you could find yourself overeating not just once or twice, but on a daily basis. Try stress management activities like taking a walk around the block, playing frisbee ( or any game) with the kids, or talking to a trusted friend.
Stress makes it difficult to access our memories.
Think back to your time in school. Were you ever so stressed out by a test that once you actually got in your seat and started taking that test you were unable to remember anything that you had learned? Almost everyone has experienced the suppression of the memory by stress. Your brain is so preoccupied with the stress that it simply cannot do anything else. Stress management activities could give you back the sharp mind that you need to really succeed! And you CAN succeed as a career woman, businesswoman, wife, and mother.
We want to avoid the physical effects of stress.
Stress comes along with a huge number of very real physical effects. Things such as poor digestion and headaches, a lowered immune system, and even cancer. It affects every aspect of your physical health, on a daily basis, whether you realize it or not. You might simply think that you are having headaches because you are tired in the afternoon, but it is more likely to be a result of stress. Unchecked stress can develop into ulcers, skin disorders, aches throughout the body, and yes, even in to heart conditions and cancer. This is why smart women make stress management activities a priority.
We want to overcome negative thinking.
A little bit of stress is perfectly fine. It can even be good for your body and mind. However, an excess of stress leads to the kind of negative thinking that precludes you from success. When you feel stressed out, you usually start to feel as though you cannot do anything. There is no path forward. Everything is too difficult; challenges are too insurmountable. Negative thinking can become a constant and it can hold you back from what you really want to do. Stress management activities can provide you with the clarity you need to soldier on and achieve your goals.
We want to get more sleep.
Stress has probably kept you up for more than one night, left you tossing and turning, unable to switch your brain off and actually get to sleep. If you are tired of the sleepless nights, it’s time to find stress management activities that work for you. When you find a way to calm your mind and body, you find a way to ensure that you get the sleep you need to be ready, willing, and able to do the work you want and need to do the next day.
